I stopped giving crystal and silver a while back. My standard gift now is a very good large stainless steel pot with pasta and steamer inserts, glass lid, cool handles along with the DK Pasta book or Waverley Root's Food of Italy or a Marcella Hazan. If they have a type of cookware registered, I go with that brand for the pot. Otherwise, usually Cuisinart. My other option (for which less expense is acceptable), I give the Chef's Choice electric knife sharpener with serrated attachment (I swear by this appliance and no one else ever gives it). I give cookbooks for wedding shower presents. For baby showers, I give books, usually DK Board books with pictures of babies doing things, First Thousand Words, a classic (like Goodnight, Moon or Beatrix Potter), and a story anthology of some sort or maybe a Mother Goose.
