St. Louis University -- New International Adoption Clinic
Saint Louis University's International Adoption Clinic (IAC) in its College of Public Service to help families and adopted children adjust to their new lives. The IAC offers services including speech-language developmental evaluation, hearing screening, social-emotional developmental assessment, and annual follow-up examinations.
"What many parents don't realize is that when a child is exposed to a new language and a new culture, communication development can be disrupted as the child drops their first language and begins to learn a new language. This can occur at any age," said IAC Coordinator Deborah Hwa-Froelich, Ph.D. "Parents may teach their children academic concepts like colors and shapes, but the children still may not be able to communicate that they're hungry."
The IAC is a collaboration between Saint Louis University's Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic and SLU's Center for Counseling and Family Therapy. The IAC will join forces with and get referrals from the Foreign Adoption Clinic and Educational Services (FACES). SSM Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital's FACES clinic treats international adoptee's medical concerns. Family counseling, speech and developmental issues will be handled by SLU's new program. The IAC also will accept referrals from adoption agencies, parents and other professionals.
